Patrick Charmel

Patrick A. Charmel, President and Chief Executive Offices of Griffin Hospital and its parent organization, Griffin Health Services Corporation, has been associated with Griffin since 1979, when he served a student internship while attending Quinnipiac College. Among the positions he has held there are Assistant to the Administrator, Assistant Administrator, Clinical Services, and Vice President, Hospital Operations.

During his tenure, he has positioned Griffin Hospital as an award-winning, innovative organization, recognized as an industry leader in providing personalized, humanistic, consumer-driven health care in a healing environment. Charmel is President of Planetree, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that supports an alliance of 65 premier hospitals located across the United States that are committed to patient empowerment and the delivery of patient centered care. Under his leadership, Griffin has appeared on the Fortune Magazine list of the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Charmel is a member of the Board of Governors of the Quinnipiac University Alumni Association and the Board of Directors of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce. He is a Corporator of the Valley United Way where he served as Co-Chairman for Professionals and Physicians in the 2001 campaign. Charmel served as Director of the Visiting Nursing Association of South Central Connecticut from 1992 to 1997, the Board of Trustees of the Connecticut Hospital Association from 1999 to 2002, and Chairman of the Housatonic Council of the Boy Scouts of America Good Scout Award Program in 2000 and 2001. He is a recipient of the James E. West Fellow Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He was inducted into the Junior Achievement Free Enterprise Hall of Fame in 2002, and he is a recipient of the Dean Avery Award given by the New London Day newspaper which recognizes an individual's commitment to the public's right to know. He led a collaborative effort to establish the Charger Health Center, the Valley's first school based health center located in Ansonia High School.

After graduating from Quinnipiac College, Charmel received a Masters of Public Health degree from Yale University. He currently lives in Hamden with his wife, Robyn and their son, Patrick.
